Be Willing to Go First
The Courage to Step Forward
There’s a saying that goes, “There’s nothing new under the sun.” While it’s true that every idea has likely been explored in some form, that doesn’t mean we can’t experience the thrill of going first in our own lives. Going first means stepping into uncharted territory—at least for you. It’s about embracing the unknown, taking a calculated risk, and transforming your world in ways you might never have imagined.
Think about the moments in history that changed the course of humanity. The ancient Romans exploring new frontiers. The Egyptians engineering marvels. The settlers in America carving out a new life. Each era is filled with stories of people willing to go first. And the beauty of it all? Each generation redefines what it means to be bold, to pioneer, to innovate. And now it’s your turn.

The Day I Left Home
For me, my most monumental go first moment came when I left my small town in Florida to move to New York City for college at the age of 17. I didn’t even turn 18 until a month into school. It was thousands of miles away from everything I knew—literally and metaphorically. The intensity of stepping into that moment, the excitement of embracing the unknown, was a hallmark experience for me.
It was one of those Bukowski moments: “What matters most is how well you walk through the fire.” And I walked through. It wasn’t easy, but it was transformative. It set the tone for the kind of boldness I try to carry into every chapter of my life.
The Ripple Effect of Going First
The funny thing about going first is that you often don’t realize how much it inspires others until later. This past year, after launching Leaders Uplifted, I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of people reaching out to check in, catch up, and share their own stories. It’s been a gift—a reminder that taking bold steps creates ripples you might not see right away.
Sometimes going first feels like standing alone on the starting line. But what I’ve learned is that it’s not always about you. It’s about the people who need to see you take that step. Someone out there is waiting for permission to dream bigger, to push forward, to believe it’s possible—and your bravery could be the spark they need.
The Pioneering Spirit
I’ve always been drawn to the cutting edge. I remember discovering Norah Jones years before she became a household name. And while I know there’s always someone further ahead, I’ve embraced my knack for staying on trend—whether it’s with new technology, innovative ideas, or working with tools like AI. My pioneering spirit keeps me curious, keeps me moving.
That said, going first isn’t always about being the absolute trailblazer. Sometimes, it’s about chasing the inspiration of others who’ve gone before you. I have a cousin who constantly pushes boundaries, and I’m endlessly inspired by her example. Even when I feel like I’m on the cutting edge, I know there’s always more to learn, more to discover.
OK, Let’s Play: Take the First Step
Going first doesn’t have to be a monumental leap—it can start with a small, intentional step. Let’s turn this into an action plan.
Ready: Think about something you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t started yet. What’s holding you back?
Set: Identify one small, manageable way to move closer to that goal. What’s the first step you can take?
Go:
- Make a list of three bold adventures or challenges you want to take on in the next three months.
- Pick one that excites you the most, and break it into smaller, actionable steps.
- Share your goal with someone who will cheer you on and hold you accountable.
- Take the first step this week—no matter how small—and celebrate the fact that you’ve started.
A Personal Reflection: Leaders Uplifted
Launching Leaders Uplifted felt like a go first moment for me in so many ways. While it wasn’t my first experience as a leader, it was the first time I put forward ideas that truly honored collaboration. It was the first time I fought for a vision that united rather than divided. And every time I put out content, every time I work with a new group, it feels like another step forward. It feels like going first all over again.
So here’s my encouragement to you: draw your starting line, step up, and take the leap. Because when you go first, you not only transform your world—you inspire others to do the same.
