How Preparation Leads to Confidence

Let’s talk about being prepared. I mean really prepared—like that feeling when you walk into a meeting, and you know without a doubt that you’ve done everything possible to set yourself up for success. It’s the difference between dreading Sunday night and actually looking forward to Monday morning.

Being prepared isn’t just for the Boy Scouts (though “Be Prepared” is a rock-solid motto). Whether you’re leading a team, launching a project, or just navigating day-to-day life, preparation is the foundation for success. It’s the difference between feeling stressed and feeling confident. You’ve probably heard that “luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” I mean, legends live by that saying.

Let’s dig into how this plays out.

Winning By Doing the Work

Now, I have to acknowledge something up front. I’m not exactly a basketball superfan- I like ALL the teams. But all-time greatness? That I can recognize, and Kobe Bryant was the epitome of greatness both on and off the court. He’s also one of the most quoted figures when it comes to preparation and confidence.

His confidence didn’t just come from natural talent. It came from the work - hours upon hours of relentless preparation. Kobe once said that when he walked onto the court, he wasn’t nervous because he knew he’d outworked everyone else. He’d put in the time, done the drills, studied the game.

This is something that’s universally relatable. You don’t have to be a basketball superstar to harness the power of preparation. When you know you’ve put in the work—whether it’s for a big meeting, a presentation, or leading your team—you walk in with confidence. You’ve done the prep, so you’re ready for whatever comes your way.

And you’ll probably start to see his quotes pop up more often on your Instagram or TikTok feed now that you’ve read these words in this blog.

Case Study: Future-Ready Leadership at IMG Academy

Let me give you a real-world example from one of the most future-ready and innovative places on earth—IMG Academy. You might have heard me talk about them before because I spent my first eight years as a professional working there as a communication coach. And let me tell you, the idea of communication coaching for athletes back in the early 2000s? Way ahead of its time.

Fast forward to more recently, I had the chance to work with their Junior Class during a week-long event called InterSession. These student-athletes? They’re always thinking about what’s next. They weren’t just preparing for their next game or season—they were looking ahead to life after sports.

The program combined game-based learning with leadership development, and the highlight was a public speaking and pitch competition where students shared ideas for future-ready courses that could benefit the next generation of athletes. It was a full-circle moment for me—a chance to see how preparation, when done right, doesn’t just help you succeed; it creates opportunities for others.

And that’s the takeaway here. Whether you’re an athlete, a leader, or somewhere in between, being future-ready means giving your team the tools and vision they need now to succeed in the future.

Entrepreneurship Is Where Preparation Meets Bold Action

Now, let’s get personal. At the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey, I often thought of myself as an epic voyager. There I was, standing on the edge of the unknown, taking a leap into entrepreneurship. I’m coming up on eight months since starting my new company, but in many ways, it feels like I’ve always been doing this.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed, I felt inspired. Why? Because I knew I’d spent 20 years preparing for this moment. Sure, I didn’t have every answer, but I had enough. Enough experience, enough knowledge, and enough confidence to take bold action. Entrepreneurship is about creating your own luck—trusting what you’ve learned while staying humble enough to keep growing.

And here’s the thing: preparation doesn’t mean waiting until you have it all figured out. It means being ready enough to jump and learning the rest along the way. My full-circle moment with IMG Academy? That was a perfect example of when preparation meets opportunity. And it’s proof that if you’re willing to put in the work and take action, the opportunities will come.

Okay, Let’s Play

You know you’re ready when you’ve done everything you can to prepare. Let’s take your readiness to the next level.

Ready: Write down what an A-minus level of preparation looks like versus a B-plus. This is your map for moving forward. How can you get to that higher level?

Set: Carve out the time—protect it. Say “no” to the stuff that doesn’t move the needle. Focus on what will push you toward that A-minus level.

Go: Try any or all of these simple readiness activator tasks to boost your planning and preparation for future success:

  • Try adopting the Pomodoro technique to stay laser-focused on your priorities and get things done with focused efficiency.
  • Make a future vison checklist with tasks and milestones going out 90-days, six months, and one year, and check it twice (because Santa can’t be the only one).
  • Learn from someone who’s already done what you want to do. How can you apply their process?
  • Book a quarterly readiness debrief with yourself: What worked? What didn’t? How can you adjust to be more ready and resilient for next time?

Plan for Your Bright Future

Here’s the deal: in 90 days, it will either be the start of the next quarter or even the start of a new season, literally and metaphorically. So wherever you are in your journey, you’ve got time to plan something that not only celebrates what you’ve accomplished but sets the stage for what’s next. Maybe it’s a team luncheon, an off-site, or even a workshop to get everyone fired up for the road ahead. Whatever it is, make it meaningful.

Your team looks to you as the champion of readiness, and you’ve got what it takes. Start now: make your list, prioritize your time, and get ready to lead them into a future of success. You’ve got this.
